How do I get to Zirakzigil?
Zirakzigil is the only area of Moria which is not situated under the mountain. It can be reached from the Door to the Clouds in Durin’s Way.

How did Gandalf and the Balrog end up on a mountain?
Gandalf pursued the monster for eight days, until they climbed to the peak of Zirakzigil, where the Balrog was forced to turn and fight, its body erupting into new flame. Here they fought for two days and nights. In the end, the Balrog was defeated and cast down, breaking the mountainside where it fell “in ruin”.
Why did Gandalf chase the Balrog?
To weaken Sauron. Gandalf was in the business of depriving Sauron of evil allies as part of his mission to defeat him. Smaug was such a threat. The Balrog surely was another such threat, and needed to be taken care of. The Silmarillion has this to say about when Sauron first wore the Ring.
